The Nepal Telecommunication Authority has said that it will not implement the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) immediately. The authority had prepared to implement this system from today (Friday). After the opposition to the decision made by the authority, the government has decided not to implement MDMS for the time being.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has instructed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel not to implement this decision immediately after the citizens who are employed abroad and criticized on social media. After the directive of the Prime Minister, the authority also said that this decision has been postponed for the time being and that the provision of bringing one more mobile phone to those coming from abroad is still in place.
There are problems in the flow of remittances, which is the basis of the country’s economy, and campaigns such as ‘no remittances’ started running on social media. Nepalis living abroad protested the government’s decision institutionally. After the instructions of the Prime Minister, the authority has suspended the MDMS for the time being. Purushottam Khanal, chairman of the authority, informed that the status quo is now maintained.
The Nepalese who are working abroad protested strongly saying that the government is going to charge up to 18 percent tax for bringing a mobile phone from abroad. After protests from everywhere, the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office has also implemented the old rules by immediately suspending the MDMS.
The Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office has made it clear that following the instructions of the government, the requirement to obtain a declaration form at the customs point for mobile phones brought from abroad will not be applicable.
