Tharu community of Western Terai celebrating Maghi festival

In the Tharu community of West Terai, Maghi is currently in full swing. Since Maghi, the main festival of the Tharu community, will be celebrated tomorrow, there has been a lot of activity in the Tharu settlement since a few days ago. Those who went out for work have returned home to celebrate Maghi. The Tharu community also considers Maghi festival as a new year. This festival is celebrated by the Tharu community as Baraka Teuhar which means big festival.

On the occasion of Maghi, the village is resounding with dances reflecting the Tharu culture. In Tharu villages, young people perform Maghauta, Sakhia and Hurdanga dances in Maghi. On the day before Maghe Sankranti, in the Aajtharu community, they kill a pig or a pig and eat it collectively. Today it is customary to stay awake all night and sing bhajan kirtan.

Tomorrow on the day of Maghi, one goes to the nearby river and bathes in the morning. After taking a bath, it is customary to take blessings from someone older than you and exchange wishes with your friends by hugging them. The Tharu community plans the New Year’s Day in Maghi itself. According to the plan made in Maghi, all the family members start their own work. The decision to separate the house and plant crops is also made in Maghi. In Maghi, all the people of the village get together and select the Badghar, i.e. village leader, watchman and Guruva for the year.

The leaders selected in Maghi will lead the village development, security, information, Kulopani and worship throughout the year.The festival has a Tharu cultural tableau, rally, various dishes, handicrafts, traditional goods, book exhibition and sale, motorcycle rally and a program to honor personalities who have made special contributions in various fields. In the festival, the special food dishes that the Tharu community eats during the Maghi festival are kept. Similarly, traditional cultural dances and songs from Tharuhat Jhapa to Kanchanpur are also being presented.
