Wild animals increase unsustainably in Sri Lanka

Colombo: The wild animals  in Sri Lanka has increased unsustainably, and a leading research institute of the country has recommended the establishment of an agrarian-wildlife conflict management unit, the Agriculture Ministry said here . The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute recommended the establishment of such a unit under the ministry.

A report has been submitted to Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera following a discussion held with university professors, members of animal rights organizations and other personnel regarding the measures to be taken to reduce the damage caused by wild animals to crops, according to the ministry.

The wild animal  in the country has already increased compared to the current forest density, and the amount of damage caused to crops by wild animals is increasing every year, said the report. Five species of animals that damage crops have been identified, including the monkey, peacock, giant squirrel and wild boar, according to the Agriculture Ministry.
