DPM Shrestha calls for right management for DRR

Kathmandu, May 12: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, asserted that disasters could not be reduced to nil but could be mitigated for which he called for the right management.

In the meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Executive Committee convened in the Ministry of Home Affairs in Singha Durbar today, DPM Shrestha reiterated, “We cannot reduce the disasters to zero. But we can reduce them. For that right management is needed and everyone needs to think about it seriously.”

Stating that there were complaints about lack of preparedness for disaster risk reduction (DRR), the DPM drew the attention of the stakeholders and concerned agencies to make it effective. “There should not be a complaint that there is a problem in disaster management in lack of implementation of the decisions or early preparedness.”

Similarly, Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet pledged to leave no stone unturned for implementing early preparedness for the DRR. According to him, the wildfires put on purposely were negatively impacting human, wildlife and environment. Thus, he demanded stern action against those wrongdoers and demanded that the consumer groups committee should be made more active.

Likewise, Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Amanlal Modi viewed that the early warning system and weather forecasting should be further advanced and modernized. Arguing that the early preparedness was important for DRR, he urged the concerned ones to make the preparedness more efficient and transparent.

Also speaking in the meeting, Chief Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi underscored detailed action-plan for disaster management.Disaster management expert Gangalal Tuladhar demanded immediate distribution of relief package for the disaster survivors.
