Dailekh youth killed in police firing at Balkumari, 54 arrested

Lalitpur, dec 29:  A youth was killed in police firing at Balkumari in Lalitpur. Police opened fire after the youths’ agitation over the Employment Permit System (EPS) examination intensified. Sudan Raut of Mahabu rural municipality-6 of Dailekh was killed in the firing, Lalitpur Police Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Karki said. He died while undergoing treatment at Patan Hospital.

He said the police used force after a mob of youths went out of control and started indiscriminately attacking nearby shops and vehicles. Some police and protesters were injured. Although the injured are undergoing treatment at various hospitals, the number is yet to be ascertained, sp KC said. Police said 54 people have been arrested. Police resorted to baton charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the youths.

The agitating youths torched the minister’s vehicle today. The vehicle of Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Prakash Jwala, who was on his way to the party office, was set on fire by the students. The minister and two security personnel were pulled out of the vehicle and set on fire, police said. According to the police, the youths, who had filled the examination form for the work of making ships i.e. ‘ship building’, could not take the examination for other areas.

The youths had moved the court against the EPS office’s decision. The court had also ordered those who failed in the ship building to participate in the examinations to be held in the productive and agricultural sectors. However, after eps opened the form only to the youth who filed the case, other youths protested. Traffic on the ring road and surrounding roads has been disrupted due to the protests.
