Kathmandu, May 17: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is going to seek a vote of confidence on May 20. Following the Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal’s withdrawal from the government and its support on May 13, PM Dahal is required to seek a vote of confidence. The constitution mandates that a vote of confidence must be taken within 30 days after the coalition partner withdraws its support.
PM Dahal has informed Speaker Devraj Ghimire of his intention to seek the vote of confidence. The Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers has also written to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, requesting that the vote of confidence be included in the agenda for the House of Representatives meeting on May 20.
Ghimire’s Press Advisor Shekhar Adhikari said that a letter has been received from the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the vote of confidence and the Secretariat has started preparations accordingly.PM Dahal also discussed this matter with the General Secretary of the Federal Parliament Padma Prasad Pandey on Thursday evening.
PM Dahal needs the support of 138 MPs to secure a vote of confidence. This is the fourth time that Dahal, who became the Prime Minister on December 25, 2022, is going to take the vote of confidence.
Earlier, PM Dahal sought the vote of confidence for the third time on March 13, 2024, after the Nepali Congress (NC) withdrew its support. At that time, he had the support of 157 MPs.
He received the vote of confidence for the second time on March 20, 2023, and for the first time on January 10, 2023.
