Lawmakers urge immediate rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts for disaster-affected areas

Kathmandu, 9 July: Lawmakers have demanded that the government inform the House about the losses resulting from floods, landslides, and inundation across the country.They also urged immediate rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.

During the ‘urgent time’ in the House of Representatives meeting today, lawmakers shared that to date, 74 people have died, six are missing, and 86 have sustained injuries due to these incidents.

Physical losses amounting to millions have been reported. Narayan Prakash Saud highlighted the severe impact of floods, landslides, and inundation on the country, with Kanchanpur suffering significant losses of lives and property.

He noted that four children have died due to these disasters and called for the government to provide relief, rescue, and rehabilitation to the victims.

Saud also mentioned that the Mahendra Highway has been obstructed by flooding and urged the government to adopt effective flood control measures.

He criticized the lack of attention to constructing embankments along riverbanks, resulting in many rivers breaching their banks and causing damage to human settlements.

Mahendra Raya Yadav echoed these concerns, stating that incessant rain has caused widespread damage, particularly in the Tarai districts, including Sarlahi.

He called for immediate relief and rehabilitation efforts and emphasized the need to conserve the Chure region to minimize future damage.Yadav also noted that any constitutional amendments should follow comprehensive discussions.

Rupa Soshi Chaudhary, a lawmaker from Sudurpaschim Province, highlighted the effects of landslides and floods in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, urging the government to take proactive measures to mitigate future disasters.

Lawmaker Ram Krishna Yadav criticized the government’s failure to address problems during the current political transition and called for all state bodies to participate in the rescue and rehabilitation of disaster victims.

Purna Bahadur Gharti Magar informed the House about the significant loss of lives and property in Rukum due to a landslide the previous night and demanded immediate rescue, relief, and treatment for the victims.

Ganga Karki mentioned the severe damage caused by landslides and floods in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9, Rolwaling, and the Tsho Rolpa trek route.

Lastly, Mohan Basnet highlighted the impact of landslides and floods in Sindhupalchowk.He requested the government to allow MPs to visit their districts during disasters without marking them absent in the House.

He also noted the death of two hydropower project workers in Sindhupalchowk and his efforts to support their families with education and employment opportunities.
