Kathmandu, 7 January: An earthquake that struck China’s Shigatse region in Tibet on Tuesday morning caused extensive damage. According to chinese media CGTN, 53 people have died due to the earthquake so far. Another 38 people were injured.
China’s Seismological Centre said the quake measured 6.8 on the Richter scale. Details of the damage caused by the earthquake have not yet been revealed, but Chinese media have released pictures of several houses collapsing.
China’s State Council’s Department of Earthquake Relief and Emergency Management said a three-tier emergency rescue operation had been activated after tuesday’s earthquake in Xigatse city of Xiang Autonomous Region.
