Feb. 21: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged students to join hands in realising the shared dream and commitment of making the country beautiful.
Addressing the 20th convocation ceremony of Pokhara University in Pokhara on Thursday, Prime Minister Oli, who also serves as Chancellor of the university, called on the graduates to dedicate themselves to society and the nation.
A total of 7,872 students graduated in the ceremony. The Prime Minister conferred degrees on students who had completed undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies from various campuses under the university. In his address, he said, “Dedicate yourself to society, nation, and your family. Working solely for oneself is selfishness.”
Highlighting that the graduates represent a talented and energetic generation, he stressed the role of youth in guiding the future.“Pokhara University and today’s ceremony have not only shown the way to Gandaki Province but have also provided direction to the entire nation. You are the leaders of the future,” he remarked.
During the special ceremony held at the university’s central office in Dhungepatan, Pokhara Metropolitan City-30, he emphasised the significance of convocation in one’s life. “A convocation is like a sacred mantra. It is a commitment to applying acquired knowledge effectively in life,” he added.
Noting that Nepalis should not suffer from an inferiority complex, Prime Minister Oli encouraged students to be courageous and strive for success. He added, “One cannot become a mahout by running away at the sight of an elephant. Train the elephant and strive to be a mahout. Be brave, but not reckless.”
Emphasising Nepal’s historical significance as a centre of knowledge, yoga, education, and civilisation, he asserted that honesty, patience, and hard work can create a promising future and opportunities within the country.He also awarded the Chancellor’s Medal to outstanding students.
Pokhara University has around 40,000 students enrolled in 68 disciplines across various campuses nationwide. Established under the Pokhara University Act of 1996, the university has previously conferred degrees on 63,558 students. Educationist and social worker George John, chief guest of the convocation ceremony, stated that every individual possesses unique capabilities and urged students to discover their potential.
He emphasised that universities serve as the birthplace of practical education and ideas. Encouraging students to navigate challenges while seeking opportunities, he said, “This time is undoubtedly challenging, but it is also filled with immense possibilities.”Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Bed Raj K.C. highlighted the university’s commitment to advancing quality education, research, and innovation.
He mentioned that a teaching hospital was established last year, and preparations are underway to launch MBBS and BDS courses soon.Located in Khudi, Dhungepatan of Pokhara Metropolitan City-30, the university spans 114 ropanis.Pokhara University operates academic programmes in management, science and technology, health sciences, and humanities and social sciences.It runs 68 programmes through its constituent and affiliated colleges, with a current student population of 39,710.
