Solukhumbu: A mountaineering conference is being held today in Thame, Solukhumbu, with a focus on the impact of climate change. The region, specifically Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, Thame, experienced significant loss of life and property due to mudslide-triggered floods on August 12 last year.
The conference is being organized as a precursor to the Sagarmatha Sambad, an international dialogue on climate change hosted by the Government of Nepal, scheduled for May.
Distinguished participants in the conference include Princess Asma Al Thani of Qatar, renowned Nepali mountaineers Kami Rita Sherpa and Mingma David Sherpa, as well as young climbers Temwa Chhiri Sherpa and Maya Gurung.
The event is being organized by the climate justice organization ‘Along’, and is regarded as a pre-event for the Sagarmatha Sambad program, which will take place from June 15 to 27.
Locals and those affected by last year’s avalanches in the Thame area will also attend the conference. Discussions will center on the various aspects of climate change, tourism, and the mountain lifestyle.
