Kathmandu: Representatives from various conflict-affected organizations submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today, calling for a more credible, transparent, and inclusive process in the appointment of office bearers to the two transitional justice commissions.
During a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the delegation—which included conflict victim and activist Devi Khadka—voiced serious concerns over the lack of consultation with victims in the recommendation process. They emphasized that the ongoing process lacks transparency and does not foster a trustworthy environment for those seeking justice.
The letter emphasized the need for impartial and trustworthy individuals, who have the confidence of the victims, to be recommended as the chair and members of the commissions, rather than those with party affiliations. The committee formed by the government to recommend the office bearers for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Investigation of Enforced Disappearances has already published a shortlist of applicants.
Prime Minister Oli assured the representatives that there should be no distrust in the commission or its process, which is being formed under the current government. He reiterated his commitment to peace and justice, stating that the victims of the conflict, including those who suffered heinous crimes such as rape, would see justice and perpetrators would be punished.
“I do not want to deceive or confuse the victims. My only focus is to ensure that transitional justice is completed,” said Prime Minister Oli. “Although my party, the CPN-UML, was not directly involved in the conflict, we too have been victims. Many of our leaders were killed during that time. Ultimately, we are all victims of violent politics.”
He added, “Both the government and the Maoists, as the parties involved in the conflict, are victims as well. The perpetrators are still among us. The country itself is a victim. Our goal is to end this cycle forever. I urge you all to remain patient, avoid panic, and work together for a positive outcome.”
