Hayu community starts activities to preserve its culture, language

Dhulikhel, May 20: People from the endangered Hayu community have started activities to preserve their language. A training is being imparted to the community located at Balting of Roshi rural municipality-10 in Kavrepalanchowk for the preservation of the language, culture and tradition of this indigenous nationalities community.

It is said that the culture and language of this minority community is on the verge of disappearance. Hayu Society Nepal with the financial support of National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities has organized a ‘Hayu language training’ for the community from Sunday.

Chairperson of Roshi rural municipality, Dinesh Lama, said emphasis was laid in preserving language as it would be difficult to protect identify of any community without language, religion, culture and tradition.He said the endangered communities themselves should be involved to preserve their language, religion, culture.

Lama mentioned that the local government has been providing support for the same.Central Chairperson of Hayu Society Nepal, Laxman Hayu, said the training was launched to preserve the language as well as identity of Hayu community as it is on the verge of disappearance.

A language class has been started at Sunkoshi rural municipality and Golanjor rural municipality of Sindhuli and Roshi rural municipality for the first time with the support of the Foundation, he stated.

Om Hayu is imparting training for 15 days starting from May 18. The state has been providing Rs 4,000 as social security allowance to each person of the community living at Balting of Roshi rural municipality and the rural municipality has been investing to preserve culture and language of the community. A total of 85 members of 10 families of Hayu community are living at Balting.
