Schools across nation shut after ANNFSU (Revolutionary) called strike

Kathmandu, July 18 — Schools across Nepal shut down on Friday after the All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary), affiliated with the CPN (Maoist) majority faction, called a nationwide education strike.

Led by student leader Dharmendra Bastola, the union announced the strike to demand the government’s commitment to free and equitable education. The protest also aimed to highlight growing concerns over the privatization of the education system and to push for the urgent passage of the long-pending Education Act.

While many private schools informed parents of the closure via SMS on Thursday evening, some failed to communicate in time. As a result, a number of students arrived at school Friday morning, only to be turned away.

Government schools, on the other hand, experienced minimal disruption, as most were already closed for the summer vacation. In a statement, the ANNFSU (Revolutionary) emphasized that the strike was a necessary step to hold the government accountable to its constitutional promise of accessible and quality education for all.
