Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has announced that 44 political parties have registered so far to take part in the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, 2026. Among them, 10 parties are newly formed.
The EC has opened the registration window from November 17 to 26, meaning only four days remain for parties to submit their applications.
Meanwhile, voter registration has seen strong enthusiasm nationwide. As of November 21, the Commission recorded 837,094 newly registered voters, highlighting a surge of public interest ahead of the polls.
Despite the approaching deadline, the CPN-UML, the second-largest party in Parliament, has not yet filed for registration. The Nepali Congress, however, officially decided on Saturday to contest the 2026 elections. The CPN-UML continues to push for the restoration of the dissolved House of Representatives.
In addition to the HoR polls, the National Assembly election is set for January 25, 2025. Registration for both elections is currently open. Out of the 19 National Assembly seats up for election, only eight parties have registered so far.
As of Friday, the Commission reports that the total number of registered parties stands at 129, which includes 10 newly registered parties, while some older ones have been removed from the rolls. Even previously registered parties must re-register if they intend to participate in the upcoming elections.
