HoR Election: EC steps up preparations with 81 days remaining

Kathmandu: With 81 days left until the House of Representatives (HoR) election, the Election Commission (EC) has accelerated its preparations. The EC has completed the registration of political parties for both the first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR) electoral systems.

The government has put necessary mechanisms in place to support the electoral process, while political parties have intensified campaign activities across the country. Election-focused programs launched by both major and emerging parties have contributed to a growing pre-election atmosphere nationwide.

The EC has also started calculating proportional representation quotas based on population data for the March 5 election. The calculation covers constitutionally mandated groups, including Dalit, Indigenous, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim communities.

A total of 100 political parties will contest the election under the proportional representation system. These parties were registered and assigned election symbols by the EC last Friday. However, only 93 unique symbols were finalized, as several parties had applied for the same symbols.

Meanwhile, 114 political parties are preparing to compete in the direct elections under the FPTP system. The EC is currently drafting the election code of conduct and has invited feedback from relevant stakeholders.
