Election Commission to decide congress legitimacy as per law: Acting CEC

Kathmandu — Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has stated that the Election Commission will decide the legitimacy of the Nepali Congress in accordance with established laws, procedures, and traditions.

During discussions with Congress leaders who approached the Election Commission to claim official recognition, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari said that since political party–related matters fall under the Commission’s established traditions, procedures, constitution, acts, and laws, the decision will be made accordingly.

He emphasized that the Election Commission will not go beyond due process and established practices. He said, “Based on the institutional traditions of the Commission, the legitimacy of the Congress will be determined.”

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari also stated that the Election Commission will complete the necessary programs required to conduct elections and ensure that the elections are held.

A dispute over official recognition has arisen within the Nepali Congress after Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma organized a special general convention and selected a Central Working Committee. Both the establishment faction and the special general convention faction are claiming official legitimacy.
