44 Days to HoR polls: Citizenship certificate mandatory for candidacy

Kathmandu — With 44 days remaining until the House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5, the Election Commission (EC) has reiterated that a citizenship certificate is compulsory for candidates seeking to file their nominations.

As per the election calendar, nomination registration is taking place nationwide today. Candidates are required to submit a copy of their citizenship certificate or voter ID card, along with evidence of their inclusion in the final voter list of any municipality or rural municipality.

The EC has also stated that individuals holding positions in the Government of Nepal, provincial governments, or local bodies, as well as those receiving remuneration from government-funded institutions, must present proof of resignation from such posts before submitting their nomination papers.

Nomination forms must be endorsed by one proposer and one seconder, both of whom must be registered voters listed in the final voter list of the same constituency.

For candidates contesting on behalf of political parties, an official nomination letter issued by the party’s central executive committee or an authorized body is mandatory. In cases where parties are contesting jointly under a single election symbol, nomination letters must be submitted in accordance with the House of Representatives Election Guidelines, 2082 BS.

Additionally, candidates are required to deposit Rs. 10,000 at the office of the concerned election officer and submit the receipt along with their nomination papers. However, women, Dalits, minority groups, and economically disadvantaged candidates are entitled to a 50 percent concession on the deposit amount.
