UK-China relationship in ‘good, strong place’, Starmer says after ‘productive’ talks with Xi

London: Sir Keir Starmer says the relationship between the UK and China is in a “good, strong place” after “productive” talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The PM says progress has been made on issues including whisky tariffs and visa-free travel to China, with No 10 saying the two countries will “maintain frank and open dialogue on areas of disagreement”.

Xi says there have been “twists and turns” in China-UK ties, but engagement is “unavoidable” – here are the key takeaways from their meeting.

Starmer has received a ceremonial welcome at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People and will shortly witness the signing of agreements with Chinese Premier Li Qiang – our correspondent looks at what deals might be discussed.

Xi and Starmer are also expected to sign off on a “border security pact” to disrupt the supply of small boat engines.

While a full rekindling of UK-China relations is unlikely, Starmer’s visit is more realistically the start of a slow diplomatic thaw, writes our China.
