‘Kathmandu District Election Office’ urges not to violate voter privacy

Kathmandu: With 25 days remaining until the election, the Kathmandu District Election Office has expressed serious concern over activities that violate voter privacy. The office has objected to the practice of asking voters whom they will vote for, including through social media and other platforms, stating that such actions breach voter confidentiality.

Drawing attention to the need to comply with the Election Code of Conduct, the office has urged all concerned not to engage in or encourage activities that undermine voter privacy. According to Clause 4 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082 (2025), such acts constitute a violation of the code. The office has warned that if these activities are not stopped, legal action will be initiated in accordance with prevailing laws.

The Election Office stated that election campaigning is permitted only from 17 days prior to polling day, after the publication of the final list of candidates. During the designated campaign period, activities such as rallies, mass meetings, corner meetings, publication or broadcast of campaign materials through the media, and door-to-door campaigning are allowed.

Despite repeated discussions, interactions, and public notices to inform stakeholders about these provisions, the office noted that some political parties, their representatives, and candidates have continued to violate the code of conduct. Reports have been received of corner meetings, campaigning, publication and broadcast of campaign materials, and door-to-door programs being conducted before the designated time to influence voters.

The Election Office has issued a strong warning against such activities and stated that if evidence of campaigning in violation of the code of conduct is found, immediate legal action will be taken in accordance with existing laws.

Code of Conduct Monitoring Officers Muktiram Rizal, Shivaram Bhattarai, Romakant Kafle, Munakumar KC, Sunita Subedi, and Rukmagat Aryal jointly urged all stakeholders to strictly adhere to all provisions of the Election Code of Conduct.
