Election campaigning allowed from today, 17 days left for the election

Kathmandu – Formal election campaigning for the House of Representatives election can begin from today. Campaign activities such as rallies, public meetings, corner meetings, and the publication or broadcast of election-related materials in the media can only take place 15 days before the election day, as per the regulations.

According to this rule, political parties and candidates can campaign from today until midnight of the 18th of Falgun (the Nepali month), which is the official deadline for election campaigning. It has been announced that all political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders must adhere to the election code of conduct while campaigning, with a focus on maintaining the integrity of the election process.

In this regard, candidates can formally ask for votes from the public during this period. The Election Commission is actively monitoring the implementation of the code of conduct and has deployed various mechanisms to ensure compliance. The commission has clarified that any violations of the code of conduct will be addressed by issuing notices and requesting explanations. If necessary, legal action may be taken.

The code of conduct was drafted after extensive consultations with political parties and stakeholders, the commission has reminded. All political parties have committed to fully complying with the code of conduct.

Regarding violations, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that the commission follows a zero-tolerance policy. If violations occur, the commission will issue notices for explanations and take appropriate actions based on the evidence, which could include warnings, fines, or even the cancellation of candidacies.

Furthermore, parties and candidates can also use print media and online platforms for advertising during their election campaigns. If they hold public meetings or corner meetings, candidates must submit an expenditure report for the venue preparation to the Election Office, either personally or through a representative.

The commission has also stated that no political party or candidate is allowed to spread false information, hate speech, or any content that could negatively impact the election or its fairness through social media or online platforms, particularly when done in an organized manner for political gain.
