Election Commission warns against misuse of technology and social media in polls

Kathmandu — The Election Commission has drawn the attention of all concerned, warning that misuse of technology could seriously undermine the fairness of the election.

The Commission has urged media and related stakeholders to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media and to play a constructive role in maintaining electoral integrity.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari requested that misleading content generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI) not be shared on social media and called for preserving the dignity of the electoral process. He also urged media outlets not to publish results based on voter surveys.

He stated, “Some recent practices involve predicting electoral outcomes before voting by analyzing voters’ conversations or publishing survey-based results. The Commission has taken serious note of this.”

According to the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, such actions may mislead voters’ independent decision-making, discourage candidates, and disturb fair competition; therefore, the Commission has requested all not to announce results prematurely.

With rapid technological advancement, the Commission has repeatedly urged everyone to help prevent the dissemination of misleading AI-generated content on social media. While technology has made information flow easier, its misuse could threaten electoral fairness, and the Commission has called for serious responsibility and full compliance with the election code of conduct.
