Modi congratulates Lamichhane, Balen on RSP’s election victory

Kathmandu: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held separate telephone conversations with Rabi Lamichhane and Balendra Shah, congratulating them on the decisive victory of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Nepal’s parliamentary elections.

Modi spoke with Lamichhane, the party president, and senior leader Balen Shah at a time when the RSP was on course to secure a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives of Nepal. The party is expected to win around 125 direct seats, with the final results of both direct and proportional representation votes nearing completion.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, Modi said he had “warm telephone conversations” with Lamichhane and Shah, congratulating them on their electoral victories and the party’s sweeping success in Nepal’s elections.

He also conveyed his best wishes for the formation of the new government and reaffirmed India’s commitment to work with the incoming leadership for the prosperity and progress of both countries.

Modi expressed confidence that cooperation between the two neighbors would further strengthen bilateral relations and help take India–Nepal ties to new heights in the coming years.

Earlier, Lamichhane and Shah had reached an understanding that Shah would assume the post of prime minister following the election.
