International day of remembrance of victims of slavery marked globally

Kathmandu — Today marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery. The day is being observed in various countries around the world, reaffirming global commitments to human rights, equality, and social justice.

On this occasion, a special commemorative event is being held at the headquarters of the United Nations.

In 2006, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade and slavery as among the most serious violations of human rights in human history. It also declared March 25, 2007, as the bicentenary of this observance.

Subsequently, from 2008 onwards, March 25 has been annually observed as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery.

On this same day in 1807, United Kingdom passed the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, declaring the buying, selling, exchange, and transportation of enslaved people from Africa illegal.
