CPN-UML intensifies protests in Kathmandu over arrest of KP Sharma Oli

Kathmandu — The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) continued its protests against the government today. The party has been demonstrating in response to what it describes as the unlawful arrest of its chairman, KP Sharma Oli, allegedly carried out on the basis of political vendetta.

Party leaders and cadres gathered at Maitighar in Kathmandu and marched toward Babarmahal as part of the protest. Earlier, party secretary Mahesh Basnet had called on leaders and supporters to participate in the demonstration at Maitighar. He also accused the current government of moving forward in an authoritarian manner.

The CPN-UML has been staging regular protests since Saturday, the day Oli was arrested. Oli was taken into custody based on the recommendation of an investigative commission, which held him responsible, in his capacity as Prime Minister, for incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z movement on Bhadra 23 and 24. Acting on this recommendation, police arrested him last Saturday.
