Sapana Pradhan Malla appointed ‘Acting Chief Justice’ of Supreme Court

Kathmandu : Senior-most Justice of the Supreme Court, Sapana Pradhan Malla, has assumed the responsibilities of Acting Chief Justice from today (Wednesday).

According to Article 129(9) of the Constitution of Nepal, in the event that the position of Chief Justice becomes vacant, the senior-most justice of the Supreme Court shall assume the role of Acting Chief Justice. The provision states that the senior-most justice automatically takes over the responsibilities upon the retirement of the Chief Justice.

Justice Malla assumed the position following the retirement of Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut on Tuesday, upon reaching the constitutional age limit of 65. A senior advocate and former member of the first Constituent Assembly, Malla was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice on 17 July 2016.
