Kathmandu: Mother’s Day, popularly known as Matatirtha Aunsi, is being observed throughout Nepal today with great श्रद्धा (devotion) and respect. People across the country are honoring their mothers and expressing heartfelt gratitude for their love and sacrifices.
On this special day, many begin their morning with ritual baths and पूजा (worship). Children and family members show appreciation by offering gifts, sweets, and specially prepared meals to their mothers. The occasion holds deep cultural and religious importance, highlighting respect, care, and lifelong gratitude toward mothers.
Matatirtha Aunsi is dedicated to both living and deceased mothers. Those who have lost their mothers visit Mata Tirtha in Kathmandu to pay tribute. Devotees gather at the sacred pond, take holy dips, and perform rituals such as tarpan, along with making offerings and giving alms to the needy.
Similarly, in Bhaktapur, people remember their departed mothers by performing memorial rituals at Hanumanghat. Nepalis living abroad also celebrate the occasion by connecting with their mothers through phone calls and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, sharing messages of love and remembrance. Overall, the day strengthens family bonds and reflects Nepal’s enduring cultural values, where mothers hold a central place in both social and spiritual life.
