Guadalajara, Mexico: South Korea made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign with a 2–1 victory over the Czech Republic, securing a crucial three points through a decisive goal in the final 10 minutes of the match.
Although the Czech Republic appeared to be under pressure for most of the game, the contest remained finely balanced until the closing stages. Up to the 80th minute, the Czechs showed signs of turning the match in their favor, but substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winning goal to hand South Korea a hard-fought victory.
South Korea dominated from the outset. Led by star player Son Heung-min, the Korean side launched a series of attacks during the first half but was unable to find the breakthrough. One of Son’s powerful strikes struck the crossbar, while another effort narrowly missed the target.
The Czech Republic took the lead in the second half when Ladislav Krejčí found the back of the net, increasing the tension and putting his side ahead.
However, South Korea responded strongly and mounted a comeback. Hwang In-beom equalized in the 67th minute with a superb strike, lifting the spirits of the Korean supporters.
The Koreans continued to press forward and capitalized on weaknesses in the Czech defense. Hwang then provided the decisive assist, and Oh Hyeon-gyu calmly converted the ball from the right flank to score the winner.
Despite a tense finish, South Korea successfully defended their lead and secured the victory. Captain Son Heung-min celebrated on the pitch immediately after the final whistle.
With the win, South Korea will next face co-host Mexico, which previously defeated South Africa 2–0. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, will take on South Africa in its next match.
