Kathmandu. Former Speaker Damannath Dhungana has passed away. He passed away today at two o’clock during treatment at the Frontline Hospital.
He was being treated for liver related problems in the hospital. Dhungana was the speaker from 2048 to 2051 BS. He is also a senior advocate. He also played a role in bringing the then rebel Maoists to the peace process.
He started his political journey by forming a student organization during the Panchayat period and has also established the identity of a senior advocate, human rights activist and civil society leader. He became the general secretary of the Nepal Bar Association in 2028 BS. He also engaged in journalism and teaching profession.
After being elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Kathmandu in 048 BS, he became the speaker. After losing to Bidya Bhandari in the mid-term elections of 2005, Dhungana was openly engaged in peace campaign. He was accused of becoming a Maoist when he was the facilitator of the government-Maoist peace talks.
