Kathmandu: Lucknow Super Giants defeated Gujarat Titans by 33 runs in the ongoing IPL 2025. It is a major blow for the 2022 champions, given that they are in pursuit of finishing in the top 2, which will allow them an additional opportunity to qualify for the final. Against Lucknow Super Giants, they had a fantastic opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table, but unfortunately, the Shubman Gill-led side suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Batting first, Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh handed LSG a fantastic start. The Australia international went on to smash his maiden century in the IPL, and that set the tone for the visitors. He made 117 runs while batting at number three, Nicholas Pooran hit an unbeaten 56 runs off 27 balls as Lucknow posted 235/2 in the first innings.
Gujarat’s bowling has been sensational this season, but it failed terribly against LSG. None of their plans worked, which is slightly concerning ahead of the business end of the tournament. When it comes to batting, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan were a force to reckon with, but after the latter failed to get going, pressure fell on the GT captain.
However, he along with Jos Buttler, looked to be in good touch and were sailing through but they eventually departed for 35 and 33 runs, respectively. It put pressure on the GT’s middle order, that hasn’t been exposed much this season. Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan seemed to be in very good touch, scoring 38 and 57 each but it wasn’t enough.
Nevertheless, Rutherford and Shahrukh’s form will be key in the remainder of the season, specially when Buttler leaves the team ahead of the playoffs due to international commitment. Meanwhile, GT will be desperate to win their final league game against Chennai Super Kings.
