‘Sixteen new political parties await approval after ‘Gen Z Movement’

Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has said that 16 new political parties are awaiting official approval in the wake of the recent Gen Z Movement. According to the EC, 17 groups have applied for party registration following the youth-led demonstrations. Of them, the Shram Sanskriti Party—headed by Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang—has already secured formal recognition.

“The remaining 16 applications are under review,” EC spokesperson Suman Ghimire said. “We are conducting necessary investigations, and once the process is complete, registration certificates will be issued to those that meet the legal requirements.”

Among the pending applicants are several new outfits, including the Gatisheel Loktantrik Party led by Birendra Bahadur Basnet, owner of Buddha Air; the Nepal Nagarik Party led by Surendra Bhandari; and the Ujyalo Nepal Party led by Gyanendra Kumar Tamang, among others.

While the EC noted that party registration is a routine task, it carries special importance this year ahead of the March 5 elections. All political parties seeking to contest must complete registration between November 17 and 26, the Commission said.
