Rabi Lamichhane–Balen Shah Meeting Fuels Speculation of Political Collaboration

Kathmandu: A recent meeting between Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has stirred considerable discussion in Nepal’s political arena, prompting speculation about possible future political cooperation between the two prominent figures.

The meeting was held at the Kamalpokhari residence of former lawmaker and RSP central committee member Asim Shah. It comes at a time when Lamichhane has been increasingly active in politics following his release from custody, intensifying public interest in his potential strategies and alliances ahead of forthcoming elections.

Following the meeting, Asim Shah shared a social media post describing the interaction as a “pleasant beginning of a story.” He referred to the meeting as a reunion of “two brothers” and suggested it symbolized more than a personal exchange, calling it a convergence of hope long sought by the country. He also extended congratulations to the Nepali people, further amplifying political interpretations of the encounter.

Although Shah did not reveal details of the discussions, he emphasized the broader importance of the meeting. “This is not just about individuals; it is about the hope the country needs,” he said.

Sources familiar with the meeting said Lamichhane and Mayor Shah held discussions for nearly five hours, starting around 8 pm on Monday and concluding at about 1 am. RSP Vice-Chair DP Aryal was also present, while Kumar Ben attended on behalf of Mayor Shah.

Despite the lengthy discussions, neither the RSP nor Mayor Shah’s office has officially disclosed the agenda or outcomes of the meeting. However, photos and videos circulating on social media showing Lamichhane and Shah leaving the venue together in the same vehicle have further fueled public and political interest.

Asim Shah, who hosted the meeting, is a former proportional representation lawmaker from the now-dissolved House of Representatives and a senior RSP leader. A former film director, he is also regarded as a prominent political figure within the Muslim community.

The meeting is widely viewed as politically significant, particularly amid rising public interest in alternative leadership and political forces outside Nepal’s traditional party structures. While both Lamichhane and Mayor Shah have remained silent on the substance of their discussions, the timing and symbolism of the meeting have ensured it remains a focal point of debate in Nepal’s evolving political landscape.
