Ukraine–U.S.–Russia trilateral talks raise hope for peace process

Washington – Trilateral talks held between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia have opened new possibilities toward ending the Russia–Ukraine war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that a document related to Ukraine’s security guarantees proposed by the United States has been fully prepared.

The document was finalized after two days of talks involving high-level political and military representatives from all three countries. According to President Zelenskyy, only the date for signing the document remains to be decided. Once signed, it will be submitted for approval to the U.S. Congress and the Ukrainian Parliament.

Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine is moving forward with the goal of becoming a member of the European Union by 2027, describing this as a key foundation of the country’s “economic security guarantees.” The talks were held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. During the discussions, he acknowledged that fundamental differences between Russia and Ukraine still persist. Ukraine reiterated that respect for its territorial integrity is a mandatory condition.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during discussions with the U.S. delegation, repeated Russia’s demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from the eastern Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.

According to U.S. officials, the talks emphasized the need for all parties to show flexibility in order to reach an agreement. Alongside military and economic issues, discussions were also held on possible frameworks for the management and monitoring of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia, which is currently under Russian control.

The next round of trilateral talks is scheduled to take place in the UAE on February 1. These discussions are expected to move the long-running full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine closer to a resolution.
