EC issues clarification requests to five candidates over code violations

Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has sought explanations from five candidates after they were accused of violating the election code of conduct.

Among those summoned are Balendra Shah (Balen) from Jhapa Constituency No. 5, Harka Sampang from Sunsari Constituency No. 1, Kamal Bhusal (Nicholous) from Rupandehi Constituency No. 2, Mahesh Basnet from Bhaktapur Constituency No. 2, and Januka Pathak from the same constituency.

The EC has raised concerns over specific actions by each candidate. Shah is being asked to clarify a social media comment he made regarding a post by fellow candidate KP Sharma Oli. Bhusal is under investigation for promoting shoes linked to the “Gen Z Protest,” which are allegedly being used as an election symbol. Sampang is facing scrutiny for allegedly involving children in his campaign activities and dressing them in promotional T-shirts.

Basnet has been called to respond to allegations of making disparaging comments about Shah, while Pathak is under investigation following complaints of using hateful language, including terms like “murderer” and “rapist,” against another candidate.
