Election Commission active in enforcing ‘Code of Conduct’, explanations sought from 21 parties

Kathmandu — The Election Commission has intensified efforts to control violations of the election code of conduct. To ensure that the election for members of the House of Representatives scheduled for Falgun 21 is free, fair, transparent, and credible, the Commission has implemented the Election Code of Conduct, 2082.

The Commission has been consistently drawing the attention of all concerned stakeholders to ensure full compliance with the code of conduct. Based on complaints and information received by the Central Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee, explanations have so far been sought from 21 entities, including political parties, candidates, and institutions.

Of these, responses have been received from only five, while follow-ups are ongoing for the remaining explanations, the Commission stated.

The Commission further noted that it is monitoring individuals who disseminate false, misleading, and hateful expressions in violation of the code of conduct, and is working in coordination with regulatory bodies to bring individuals or institutions involved in illegal activities within the ambit of the law.

According to the Commission, the Election Information Dissemination and Coordination Center established under it, along with the Information Integrity Promotion Unit, is fully operational.

Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai informed that a total of 302 harmful pieces of information identified by the unit have been forwarded to the concerned authorities for action in accordance with the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063, and the Press Council Act, 2048.

The Commission has clarified that complaints regarding any activities that undermine the dignity and integrity of the election process may be lodged—through written, verbal, or electronic means—with the Commission, the Office of the Chief Election Officer, the Office of the Election Officer, provincial/district election offices, or district code of conduct monitoring officers.
