Kathmandu: Six justices of the Supreme Court have been recommended for the position of the next Chief Justice. The current Chief Justice, Prakash Man Singh Raut, is set to retire upon reaching the constitutional age limit of 65.
In view of his impending retirement, the Judicial Council has recommended the names of the senior-most Supreme Court justice Sapana Pradhan Malla, along with Justices Kumar Regmi, Hari Phuyal, Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Dr. Nahakul Subedi, and Til Prasad Shrestha for the post.
According to the constitutional provision, justices who have served at the Supreme Court for at least three years are considered eligible for the position of Chief Justice. The recommendation for a new Chief Justice must be made at least one month before the incumbent retires.
As the election to the House of Representatives of Nepal has recently concluded, the Constitutional Council of Nepal has not yet been fully formed. The Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the leader of the main opposition party have not yet been finalized.
As per constitutional provisions, the proposed Chief Justice recommended by the Constitutional Council will be appointed only after receiving approval through a parliamentary hearing.
