Operation Safety: Five involved in gang activities arrested, 18 detained at airport

Kathmandu: Kathmandu Police conducted an overnight operation named “Operation Safety,” during which five individuals involved in gang-related activities were arrested from various locations across the Valley. Additionally, 18 individuals were taken into custody at the airport for harassing and troubling passengers.

According to Police Superintendent Pawan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, the police launched “Operation Safety Kathmandu” last night. During the operation, Praveen Tamang, also known as “Dimpal,” who was reportedly involved in gang activities as part of the Shyam Lama group in Bouddha, was arrested.

Similarly, Birju Maharjan was arrested from the Kalanki–Bafal area on charges of engaging in gang activities. Sujan Karki was detained from the bus ticket counter and petrol pump area in Kalanki for similar offenses. Saru Humagain was apprehended from the Syuchatar area, and Biki Lama was arrested from Bouddha for involvement in robbery and gang-related activities, Bhattarai stated.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation conducted the same night, 18 individuals were detained from the Tribhuvan International Airport area for harassing passengers, coercing them into staying at hotels of their choice, and taking commissions from both the passengers and hotels. Among them, 10 were found to be directly involved in taking commissions and mistreating passengers, according to spokesperson Bhattarai.
