Kathmandu: Tribhuvan University (TU) has announced plans to forcibly evict organizations and individuals occupying its land for institutional and commercial purposes after they failed to vacate the premises despite the expiration of a 35-day deadline.
TU’s General Administration Division had issued a public notice on April 17, directing those occupying university land to vacate within 35 days. The university subsequently sent formal letters to 17 organizations and institutions instructing them to return the land. However, with the deadline now expired and most occupants still refusing to comply, TU has decided to take stricter measures.
According to TU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sushil Bahadur Bajracharya, the concerned parties will be granted a brief additional period to remove their belongings. He stated that if the land is not vacated within that timeframe, the university will proceed with forced eviction.
University officials also briefed Minister for Education and TU Co-Chancellor Raghuji Panta on the matter on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor Bajracharya said the minister had expressed support for the university’s decision and instructed officials to move forward with the process.
TU clarified that certain government agencies currently operating on university land will be allowed to remain due to institutional requirements. Offices such as those of Nepal Police will not be removed. However, individuals and organizations engaged in commercial activities on university property will be evicted.
The university is continuing discussions with the 17 entities that received notices to vacate. During a meeting held on Wednesday, Laboratory School proposed leasing the land from TU, but the university reportedly rejected the proposal.
Regarding the TU Cricket Ground, the university appears willing to adopt a more flexible approach. As the government is preparing a master plan for the facility and no immediate alternative venue is available, TU is considering allowing cricket activities to continue temporarily under a time-bound arrangement. The university had earlier sent a notice to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to vacate the premises.
Following the 35-day ultimatum, the Nepal Professors’ Association, TU Professors’ Association, and TU Employees’ Association have informed the university that they will return the land under their use. Meanwhile, some tenants have requested additional time and have been granted an extension until the end of the Nepali month of Jestha.
