About 700,000 birds culled after bird flu confirmed; farmers to receive compensation

Kathmandu: The Department of Livestock Services has reported that nearly 700,000 birds have been destroyed in 10 districts, including the Kathmandu Valley, following confirmed cases of bird flu.

According to the department, around 300,000 kilograms of poultry feed were also destroyed in the affected areas as part of disease-control measures.

The disease has been detected in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi districts. To prevent further spread, Rapid Response Teams have been deployed in the affected districts, said the department’s Director General, Dr. Umesh Dahal.

As no vaccine has been developed for bird flu, infected birds and poultry products are destroyed immediately after an outbreak is confirmed. Authorities have also destroyed approximately 1.1 million eggs.

The department stated that compensation will be provided to farmers for the birds and poultry products that were culled. District Administration Offices in the affected areas will assess farmers’ losses and prepare detailed reports, which will then be submitted to the department. Based on these assessments, the department will coordinate with the respective provincial governments to arrange compensation for the affected farmers.
