Kathmandu, April 7: Stakeholders have stressed the need for the government to be serious about the protection of children and the implementation of their rights. They were participating in a thematic discussion with the theme of the ‘National CSOs’ Dialogue on SDG 8.7 and Child Rights’ organised hereon Friday by the NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) in collaboration with The Asian Foundation, USAID, as part of the National Civil Society Conference 2023 and the 28th Annual General Meeting of the NFN that kicked off in Kathmandu on April 6.
On the occasion, calling for the government to be serious about the protection of children, Tillotam Paudel, child rights activist, sought cooperation of all sectors in this regard. Children are the properties of the State. So, the state should invest in them, he stressed.
Similarly, CWIN Nepal (Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Centre) Spokesperson Kumar Bhattarai asked the government to protect children as he said they are pride and properties of the state, and investment in them would be safe. Pointing out that it is the responsibility of the state to provide them proper education and other facilities, he said their protection and investment in them would help shape the future of the state.
Similarly, Deepak Karki, Joint Secretary, the National Human Rights Commission, pointed out the need for seeking integrated approach, effective instruments and interlinks to create safe space for children. Information technology has surfaced as a place to mete out violence against children, he cautioned. Despite rampant cases of child rights violation, it was sad that only 15.7 percent recommendations relating to the execution of child issues by the NHRC have been implemented, according to him. The picture is very serious, he added. Yam Lal Bhusal,
Joint Secretary, the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, said the Ministry was moving ahead on the issues of child rights through a long-term perspective. Aside from the implementation of the Act relating to Children and the Children’s Regulation, the Ministry has made an action plan in this regard, he said. He also sought multi-sectoral cooperation for the protection of children.
