Kathmandu, April 21: The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office to collect waste from the country’s major administrative hub Singha Durbar, the Office of the President and the Prime Minister’s residence area within the next three days.
A single bench of justice Prakashman Singh Raut issued an interim order to this effect on Friday. As per the Constitutional and legal provisions, the local level is found to have been assigned the responsibility of managing the waste and this applies in the case of the Kathmandu Metropolis, according to the SC.
It may be noted that the Kathmandu Metropolis has not been picking up waste from the above mentioned locations since April 7 and advocate Padam Bahadur Shrestha moved the court, challenging the decision of the local government. The court verdict came in response to the same writ.
Stating that the landfill site being used by the Kathmandu Metropolis lies in the territory of other local level government, the apex court also drew the government’s attention to ensure necessary coordination with those local levels, people and stakeholders concerned.
