HoR breaks 13-day deadlock; Home Minister Shrestha to address lawmakers’ concerns

Kathmandu: The House of Representatives (HoR) successfully rekindled its legislative activity after a 13-day halt, brought on by the steadfast opposition of CPN-UML. This resumption signals a substantial breakthrough in the legislative gridlock that had gripped the parliament.

The revival of parliamentary proceedings followed a consensus achieved among the top echelons of Nepal’s three pivotal parties. These critical negotiations unfolded within the confines of the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar.

The HoR’s resurgence transpired as a result of UML’s willingness to provide an audience for Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha’s imminent discourse within the parliamentary arena. However, UML lawmakers claim that their party’s demand for the establishment of a high level committee for the investigation of gold smuggling retains its prominence.

Ahead of the Home Minister’s slated address, a specialized provision will be enacted, allowing parliamentarians to address pressing concerns within an expedited timeframe, hinging on proportional party representation.

This procedural adaptation seeks to facilitate pivotal discussions that had been postponed amidst the prolonged obstruction. The standoff that persisted since July 26, characterized by UML’s resolute disruption of HoR proceedings, was primarily fueled by their call for a high-level inquiry committee.
