Government engaging in revenge politics, similar to what occurs in Pakistan: UML Chairman Oli

Kathmandu: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has accused the government of engaging in revenge politics, similar to what occurs in Pakistan.During an event organized by the Guru Luintel Memorial Foundation in Kathmandu on Saturday, Oli mentioned that those who voiced opposition against the government had faced numerous repercussions.

He specifically pointed out the government’s arrest of Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Sunil Sharma, citing that Sharma was detained on the grounds of possessing a fake certificate. Oli alleged that this action was taken because Sharma demanded the resignation of the Home Minister and the Finance Minister in connection with the gold smuggling case.

Sharma, a lawmaker from the NC, had been apprehended on charges related to forging academic certificates while still maintaining his position as a medical doctor. The prominent leader of the opposition criticized the government for revisiting Sharma’s case as a form of reprisal, paralleling this approach with political dynamics in Pakistan.

Additionally, Oli leveled criticism at the government for disregarding the opposition party’s call for the establishment of a High-Level Committee to investigate the gold smuggling scandal, insinuating that the government itself may have played a role in the controversy.

The UML party has been impeding parliamentary proceedings for several weeks, demanding the creation of the Committee to delve into the gold smuggling issue. Their argument is rooted in the belief that the government’s mechanisms are insufficient to curb corruption involving high-profile officials. However, other fringe parties in the parliament alleged that UML call for the Committee is an attempt to distract the public concern against corruption.
