Livestock insurance turning effective

The livestock insurance programme is turning effective in Chautara Sangachowk Gadhi municipality of Sindhupalchok lately.Iswori Prasad Nepal, a local of ward-7, and Maiya Sapkota, a resident of ward-4, got livestock insurance of Rs 90,000 each after their two insured buffaloes died.

It may be noted that the local farmers had participated in the livestock insurance programme based on the notice of the municipal livestock service section. In its annual policy and programme for the fiscal 2022/23, the municipality had introduced the livestock insurance scheme. Since then, the municipality has run the insurance programme with 50 percent grant amount from the municipality and equal 50 percent from the farmers. It excludes the grants provided by the federal government for livestock service.

Handing over the insurance amount, municipality mayor Krishna Prasad Sapkota said the incentive would directly provide economic benefits to the farmers. Farmers had also enthusiastically participated in insurance programme after the mayor facilitated its tough procedures in the very beginning, informed municipality’s Section Chief Arjun Khadka.

As of mid-January 2023, insurance of 380 cows/buffaloes and 20 goats was done through the municipality. The Livestock Section shared a process has been put forward to bring other 200 cattle under insurance coverage scheme.
