AI-Powered Drone Patrol launched in Mustang Conservation Areas

Mustang: Mustang has introduced forest patrols using AI-enabled drone technology for the first time. The Area Conservation Office in Jomsom, operating under the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, has begun using modern drones to monitor high-altitude pastures, grazing lands, and remote forest areas.

Previously, drones in Mustang were mainly used for filming movies, documentaries, festivals, and other audiovisual productions. However, this marks the first time AI drone technology has been deployed specifically for forest conservation and patrolling purposes.

According to ACAP Jomsom, the technology has been introduced to improve forest monitoring in the district’s difficult terrain, remote highlands, and sparsely populated areas.

Senior Natural Resource Conservation Assistant Sanjog Thakali stated that the drones are being used to protect forests, forest resources, and wildlife, while also helping control poaching and other illegal activities in conservation areas.

Drone patrols have already been carried out in Lupra Lake of Baragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality–1, as well as in the Bhraksa and Namkhulek areas of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality. As the Yarsagumba harvesting season is currently underway, ACAP has intensified surprise monitoring through AI drone surveillance.

The drones are being used to prevent illegal activities that may occur during Yarsagumba collection, including setting traps in highland areas, carrying firearms for illegal wildlife hunting, and actions that could increase the risk of forest fires.

According to ACAP, the drone weighs 1,063 grams and is capable of flying up to 15 to 20 kilometers, reaching altitudes of around six kilometers. The drone can operate at speeds ranging from 90 to 97 kilometers per hour.
