It needs everyone’s efforts to prevent child marriage : Stakeholders

Kathmandu, March 27 : Stakeholders have commented that child marriage in Nepal is on the decline, yet it needs everyone’s efforts to prevent such occurrences. Speaking at a policy dialogue event organised by Girls Not Brides Nepal (GNB Nepal) and the National Action and Coordinating Group to End Violence Against Children (NACG Nepal) on Sunday, the stakeholders appreciated anti-child marriage laws and community-level efforts.

Yam Lal Bhusal, a joint secretary at the Ministry of Women and Children said provincial and local governments are also making efforts to control the problem besides the federal-level initiatives. Yet, there exist some challenges, according to him.

National Child Rights Council vice-chairperson Bam Bahadur Baniya said the council would partner with all government and non-government actors in its campaign against early marriage.

Child rights activist Gauri Pradhan said everyone should make efforts to end child marriage as an end to the problem could enhance the country’s global image. NACG chairperson Kiran Thapa said his organisation would make efforts to further enhance the coordination among different stakeholders for the campaign.
