Kathmandu., 17 Oct : Kul Acharya and Badri KC have been granted non-resident Nepali citizenship. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal conferred the citizenship of Non-Resident Nepalis to Acharya and KC at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. With this, a program to give citizenship to non-resident Nepalis has started.
Acharya and KC are also the current presidents of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA). With this, the way has now been opened for other Non-Resident Nepalis to get citizenship. According to the Citizenship Act amended in May last year, the government had already approved the citizenship rules, paving the way for non-resident Nepalis to get citizenship.
Section 7 (a) 1 of the Citizenship Act provides that a person who has acquired the citizenship of a foreign country and has resided in a country other than the member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and has been a citizen of Nepal on the basis of descent or birth, he or her father or mother, grandfather or brother-in-law and later obtained citizenship of a foreign country can get non-resident Nepali citizenship so that he can enjoy economic, social and cultural rights.
Those who get this citizenship will not get the right to do politics, hold government posts and vote in Nepal. They will be able to do business in Nepal and keep property in Nepal.
